Perched on a rocky outcrop detached from the Mâlain fault and overlooking the village with its imposing ruins, the castle is a lordship documented as early as the 11th century.
Les familles qui l'occupèrent successivement, de son origine à la Révolution, jouèrent à plusieurs reprises un rôle important en Bourgogne, et même à la cour du roi.

From May to September, the territory comes alive through a vibrant and lively, creative and joyful program.
In the summer season, the castle comes alive and offers a varied program: theatre, music, landscape readings, Nights of the Stars, monthly and seasonal exhibitions, unusual, panoramic and nighttime events…

The castle is much more than what you see in the distance, on the road to Mâlain!
The site was indeed abandoned for many years before being rediscovered and revealed by a group of passionate volunteers. Discover its history and explore all our tour formats to allow you to explore the site at your own pace.
Is there a place to picnic at the castle? And if it rains, is there shelter available?
You can picnic outside the castle, near the public car park, where a grassy area with benches and tables is available. In case of rain, please contact the Mâlain town hall at 03.80.23.60.52 for directions to a sheltered location.
Do we need to book in advance for the visit/workshops/treasure hunt…?
It depends! Some of our tours and activities taking place at the castle are subject to limited capacity and may require a reservation to ensure the comfort of the public.

Who has been rebuilding the castle for the past 40 years? Are there still ongoing works?
The restoration of the castle has been ensured for 40 years by a group of passionate volunteers from the GaM association, under the aegis of the town hall of Mâlain, which became the sole owner of the site again in 2024.

What is the connection between the castle and the Witches' Fair?
There is no connection between the Witches at the Fair event and the history of Mâlain Castle. No witch ever lived in the castle, and no spells were ever cast on the premises.
However, every two years, the Witches' Fair brings thousands of visitors to Mâlain Castle, and all local stakeholders work hand in hand to provide an exceptional experience for the public.
40 années d'excavation et de reconstruction
1984 : le Groupe archéologique du Mesmontois (GaM) se lance dans une aventure humaine hors du commun et restitue le site pierre après pierre, pendant plus de 40 ans.
